Community Conversations Convened

February 26, 2011: Hanover Planning Tool development begins with a facilitated discussion focusing on strategic indicators for charting community progress to specific sustainability goals.

February 26, 2011: Hanover Community Sustainability Workshop II: Celebration of community successes since the 2009 workshop as well as practical discussions about home energy and gardening strategies.  What have we accomplished and why is it we need to continue to act?

Winter 2011: Community Conversations - Menu for the Future.  Helped organize the first Upper Valley wide 'community conversation' focusing on the topic of food and agriculture and using the Northwest Earth Institute discussino course:  Menu for the Future.

April & November 2010: The Naked Table Project - Hanover, connecting people to each other and the land by making things by hand.  Collaborative venture with Shackleton/Thomas Furniture & Pottery, based in Bridgewater, VT and with a store in Hanover.  The Naked Table promotes sustainable forestry, craftsmanship, local economies and community.  The Montshire Museum and The Howe Library each received a donated NT from the April event;  Two families, graduates of The Family Place, received tables that were donated by Hanover families from the November event.  The Family Place, in Norwich, also received its first Naked Table for its newly renovated dining room.  In addition, 15 Upper Valley families now have hand crafted tables in their homes, made from local and regional wood.  The November event involved using maple trees that were sustainably harvested from the former Water Company property.  Food was provided by Charles Umpleby, Owner and Chef, Umpleby's Bakery & Cafe in Hanover.


January 2010: Education "Summit" with representatives from the Howe Library, the Upper Valley Localvores, The Upper Valley Sierra Club, SERG, Catamount Earth Institute, Upper Valley Land Trust & the Hanover Conservation Commission Biodiversity Committee.  Goal:  To discuss strategies for coordination and collaboration as we each strive to harness the energy of our respective groups to achieve local and regional sustainability goals.

February 2009: Hanover Community Sustainability Workshop:  Introduction to The Nature Step framework;  Development of initial action steps and priotization for a plan.

Local & Regional Conferences Attended

December 4, 2010: Community Energy & Climate Action Conference, Fairlee, Vermont (Opening address by Governor-Elect Peter Shumlin, Keynote by Jared Duval, Fellow at Demos, a New York based think talk.  Governor-Elect Shumlin discussed the following:  We need to redesign the way we live in the world through efficiency, renewables and innovation.  (1) These days it is less fashionable to talk about climate change, but talking about it is a moral imperative; (2) Must focus on small, community-based sources of energy - "Solar on every building"; (3) Must find a way to make innovations cost effective.  Notes from the meeting.

June 19, 2010: Local Energy Solutions Conference, Concord, NH.  Organized by Clean-Air Cool-Planet.  Keynote address by Curt Spalding, Regional Administrator for EPA New England.

May 25, 2010: Upper Valley Energy Roundtable, White River Junction, Vermont.  Hosted by the Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission.  Presentations on PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy), UV-HEAT (Upper Valley Home Energy Assistance Team), MEAP (Municipal Energy Assistance Program), VT program and funding resources, NH program and funding resources.  Discussion about tracking municipal savings and progress in a NH statewide database.
